Insulation of sewer pipes is the process of creating a protective layer that reduces heat loss in the pipeline. It prevents the structure from freezing and allows comfortable operation of the system in winter. We will talk in more detail about how to do the work with your own hands.

Features of the operation of the sewage system in winter

Freezing of pipes in winter is a common phenomenon for the local sewage system, which is used by residents of private houses. In frosty weather, a large number of ice build-ups can appear on the highway, which increase in size over time. All this leads to inhibition of the water flow and filling the pipe with liquid waste. As a result, the drains stop moving to the disposal site, and the structure can collapse under the influence of the liquid expanding during freezing. It is quite difficult to eliminate the consequences of an accident in winter, especially if the highway is underground.

The problem can be solved in three ways:

  • By burying sewer pipes to a depth exceeding the level of soil freezing in a given area;
  • Thermal insulation of the track with special materials;
  • Heating system.

To bury pipes, they dig a trench below the level of freezing of the soil in a given area. At such a depth, the temperature is stably kept at around + 10 + 12 degrees, which does not allow liquids to freeze. In this case, there is no need to insulate the system with special materials. This option is not very popular among users due to the need to carry out a large amount of land work. The job becomes more difficult if it is not possible to use an excavator. With a freezing depth of 1.5 m, the depth of the trench should be 1.6 m. Taking into account the slope of the bottom at the end of the ditch, it can be even greater. For a septic tank, you will need a foundation pit 2.5-3 m deep. Also, deep trenches complicate the repair of the system, especially in winter.

The depth of soil freezing in the European part of Russia is shown in the table below:

The most common way to protect pipes from frost is to insulate the sewer with special materials. It is used in such cases:

  • If the highway is planned to be buried above the level of soil freezing.
  • In the presence of sharp turns in the track or a large number of them.
  • If the angle of inclination of the pipe is small - less than 20 mm per 1 m of the trench. Also, a track with a too large angle of inclination is subject to insulation.
  • If the sewer is often clogged.

Heating pipes is considered the most reliable protection of the system in extreme cold (at air temperatures below -15 degrees). The line is heated with a special heating cable, which is attached to the outside of the branch or stretched inside.
