Before use, bamboo stems are dried by creating certain temperature conditions and humidity levels. A sharp decrease in climatic indicators can lead to cracking of the trunk. So that in the process of further processing or direct use, the material retains all its inherent advantages, it is treated with a special varnish.

Properly crafted bamboo products are renowned for several virtues, including:

  • High strength and rigidity with relatively low weight.
  • Long service life.
  • Possibility of a practical and attractive combination of bamboo products with other natural materials, such as stone and wood.
  • Elementary care. No special tools or products are required to clean bamboo, just use a damp cloth or vacuum cleaner.
  • Thermal and sound insulation is more characteristic of recycled bamboo finishing materials (wallpaper, slabs, panels).

Types of bamboo materials for ceiling decoration

For finishing the vertical and horizontal planes of the room, bamboo sheets, slabs, panels and bamboo trunks are used. All versions of products for ceiling decoration differ in the way of production.

Some time ago, bamboo trunks were only available by special order. Currently, the market is increasingly saturated with this type of finishing materials. The importing countries of bamboo and products from it are Vietnam, Abkhazia, China, Thailand and some others.

Bamboo stems are used for ceiling finishing in both recycled and natural form. By using natural bamboo, you can make a suspended ceiling, but cracks will be visible between the individual elements. In addition, the trunks, depending on the diameter, can visually make the surface heavier. The bamboo ceiling will undoubtedly fit organically into a room designed in the Eco style. Otherwise, it is better to use recycled material.

To soften the design, use solid trunks only for decoration, such as replacing edging and / or docking strips with bamboo trunks.

Testes are made from bamboo stalks, which are later used in the production of slabs and panels. Plates and panels are formed manually. Therefore, their cost is slightly higher than that of other bamboo finishing options. After weaving the plank into a single composition, the product is pressed to compact the structure and obtain a thin sheet.

Manufacturers offer two standard options for wicker sheets: bamboo panels measuring 122x244, 100x190 cm, bamboo slabs - 60x60 cm. The thickness of bamboo sheets varies from 1 to 7 mm, this difference is determined by the number of layers of tesa.

Thinner sheets are used for perfectly flat surfaces. And vice versa, in order to hide minor plane defects, a denser product is used. Bamboo ceiling panels are almost unsuitable due to their size. It is much more convenient and practical to mount plates of the correct square shape on the ceiling.

Bamboo ceiling slabs are no more than 4 mm thick, other types are advisable to use for flooring. They are distinguished by a variety of ornaments. This finishing option, in combination with other decorative elements made from natural materials, will refresh any space, create a feeling of unity with nature.

Bamboo canvas is a roll material for decoration and decoration, nothing more than wallpaper. To make a bamboo canvas, the stem of the plant is cut lengthwise into thin plates, the so-called lamellas. The width of the lamellas can be different (from 4 to 24 mm). However, the pressed plates are much wider - from 2.5 to 10 cm.

The resulting lamellas are tinted and varnished, then fixed on technical gauze with the help of glue. Parameters of bamboo wallpaper rolls: width - 90, 100, 180, 200, 250 and 270 cm, length - 5, 10, 14 and 15 m.

With the help of bamboo wallpaper, you can visually reduce or increase the parameters of the room and the height of the ceiling, respectively, choosing canvases with wider or narrower lamellas. The bamboo wallpaper ceiling can be integrated into almost any interior thanks to the natural material with natural colors.

Some manufacturers offer bamboo wallpaper with a pattern printed on them, most often the patterns are dim. The color and texture of the bamboo canvas depends on which part of the stem is used in production: external or internal. Bamboo wallpaper from the outside of the plant has the most pronounced texture and stem structure.

Changing the color of the lamellas is achieved by heat treatment or dyeing using natural dyes. Particularly noteworthy is the combined bamboo canvas, which combines lamellas of various sizes and colors. The bamboo ceiling with the use of combined canvases is distinguished by its brightness and uniqueness of colors, will help to create a unique atmosphere in the room.

Before decorating the ceiling with bamboo, it is imperative to perform such preparatory manipulations that will ensure the rational use of the material and help save money:

  1. Prepare the ceiling surface for finishing work by removing dust and debris and filling cracks. Be sure to level the surface so that direct installation takes place without additional problems, and the finishing material adheres to the ceiling as firmly as possible.
  2. Use special primer solutions to improve adhesion. When choosing an impregnation for the main ceiling, keep in mind that some of them not only improve the adhesion of two materials, but also resist the development of mold and mildew.
  3. Having familiarized yourself with the characteristics of the varieties of bamboo finishes, as well as being guided by the manufacturer's recommendations, choose the option that best suits your interior and price preferences.
  4. Taking into account the parameters of the selected type of bamboo covering for the ceiling, as well as the size of the room, calculate the required amount of material. For convenience and clarity, draw on paper a diagram of the exact location of the individual trim elements.
  5. When the calculations are completed, the scheme needs to be transferred to the ceiling.

To diversify the parallel lines of bamboo wallpaper, experiment with their position on the ceiling, changing the angle of the gluing in relation to the walls. The bamboo canvas can be cut into individual elements, laid in a sequential or chaotic order to disrupt the correct geometry of the wallpaper, thereby creating your own unique ornaments. In this case, it is important to make the correct calculations so as not to spoil the material when cutting.

The choice of adhesive for bamboo ceiling

Pay special attention to the selection of the adhesive. Suitable options for the mass: glue on a bustilate basis, PVA, adhesive contact Pufas K-12, "Dragon", "Moment", liquid nails. Professionals recommend avoiding the use of water-based glue.

The bustilate glue hardens quite quickly, therefore, after applying to the surface, it is necessary to complete the installation in 4-5 minutes, moreover, avoid applying an excessive amount of this adhesive, because it removes badly.

Some manufacturers of bamboo panels and linens recommend using Ansercoll rubber-based eco-glue, which fixes the material just as quickly.

One of the easiest ways to make a bamboo ceiling is with bamboo slabs. Their installation on the surface of a ceiling made of plasterboard is carried out using PVA glue. Additionally, the slabs are fixed with a construction stapler in several places, for example, in the corners and in the center. When the glue is completely dry, the staples must be carefully removed.

Renovation professionals recommend sanding the bamboo slabs on the inside and the ceiling surface before applying the glue with fine sandpaper to facilitate the penetration of the glue and thereby improve the adhesion properties of the surfaces.

The bamboo canvas is glued to the ceiling quite simply. The process is almost the same as gluing paper wallpaper. Before starting work, unfold and spread a roll of wallpaper on a flat surface in the room for which it is intended.

Installation features are associated with shaping, cutting of canvases:

  • To trim the excess canvas across the wallpaper, use a jigsaw or a hacksaw for wood, but only with small teeth, so that the strips do not crack during the sawing.
  • Along the lamellas, the canvas is easily cut with a sharp knife.
  • Only trim to the front to avoid chipping.
  • Bamboo wallpapers are not plastic, therefore, when gluing them to the corners, the canvas cannot smoothly move to another plane, it must be cut.

Joints, corners, transitions are decorated with bamboo or plastic slats, part of a bamboo trunk or a decorative rope.

When gluing a bamboo canvas to the ceiling, the speed of drying of the glue is important, it should be maximum, because bamboo material is quite weighty and not pliable, so it can peel off until the adhesive has hardened.
