If you want to renew the roof without removing the old covering, or are building a house and want to purchase an inexpensive material for its top, then ondulin will certainly suit you. A standard sheet of roofing ondulin has dimensions of 2 meters x 96 cm. How much ondulin is needed on the roof is very easy to calculate. For this, the total area of the covered surface must be divided by 1, 5.

To date, the price for ondulin is as follows: 1 sheet costs about 400 rubles. Therefore, for such a roof, you will spend 7,600 rubles for this basic material. Find out how much you can buy 50 x 50 cm bars in your area, add their cost and the price of fasteners to the total.

If you do not have your own transport on which you can bring building materials, delivery is also included in the cost estimate. It is advisable to buy these products at a retail outlet that is closer to the suburban area.

If in the construction market or in a specialized hypermarket for ondulin the price is much less than in a nearby outlet, and the transportation costs are not high, then it is more expedient to purchase building materials for the roof there.

Summarizing the above, we highlight the main advantages that an ondulin roof will have, adding a few more:

  • Affordable price;
  • No need to remove the old coating;
  • There are several colors to choose from;
  • The ondulin sheet weighs 6 kg, so it is not difficult to lift and mount it;
  • Such a roof will not "make noise" in the rain, because the components of the coating are pressed cardboard, bitumen and special additives;
  • Quick installation.

Of the shortcomings, one can single out a shorter service life than, for example, a metal tile. But the financial costs for the roof from ondudin are much less.

After you have finally decided on the roofing material, have acquired everything you need, it's time to start. From the accompanying equipment you will need a ladder, a hacksaw, a tape measure, a hammer, and gloves. Usually at the dacha there is enough of such "goodness", so our cost estimate does not include these items.

As you already know, the old roofing does not need to be removed, it is enough to remove dirt and debris from it. Of course, if the roof is overgrown with moss, it must be cleaned off and walked with a special compound in order to subsequently prevent such vegetation.

Now fill the bars first along the length, and then crosswise. On them you will lay the roofing ondudin. This process has its own subtleties.

Place the sheets at the bottom corner from the direction of the wind. Attach this first row first, then staggered the second. The edges of the ondulin sheets of the upper row extend to the lower one by 15-30 cm in order to prevent precipitation from flowing. When attaching adjacent sheets, they are placed on top of each other on 1 wave.

You will need 20 nails per sheet. Drive nails only into the upper waves, then the water will not seep into the holes, but will flow down. Drive nails into the bottom edge into each wave, and in the middle of the ondulin sheet - through one wave.

You cannot cover the roof with this material if the weather is wet outside. When wet, the ondulin material can deform, and subsequently, due to temperature drops, sunlight, this part can become fragile and crack.

Ondulin is well cut with a hacksaw or a construction knife. Therefore, by measuring the required sheet size, you can tame it without any problems.

When attaching nails, put on special hats on them that will not allow moisture to penetrate inside. Close the joint, if the roof is gable, with a ridge. You cannot walk on the ondulin, in order to avoid bending it. Therefore, leave the narrow side vertical row unopened for now so that you can go down and up.

After all the sheets of ondulin are fixed, it remains for you to lay the gable material in order to limit the edges of the roof, protect it from moisture in this place and give the roof a finished aesthetic look. The length of the gable material is extremely simple to determine. It is equal to the length of the roof slopes.

We considered the option of updating the roof without removing the old one. If you have erected a house, you will cover the roof, the stages of work and the materials used change slightly. First of all, a rafter system is made, consisting of rafters and lathing. But first, it is chosen what type of roof will be: gable, broken or single-pitched.

Thick boards are stuffed onto the rafters. On top of them, you need to put a waterproofing material, and only then the coating is made with ondulin.

This technology has been described in detail above. If you plan to make a fireplace in the house, you need to install a pipe for ventilation on the roof. This system is also needed to ventilate the attic, if it is not used as a living space.

Before laying the roof, decide where the ventilation pipe will be located. Cut holes of almost the same diameter as it (2mm larger). Better to put the ventilation pipe on right away. Nail the ondulin around it with the same nails, placing them every 10 cm.

Use insulating tape, rubber mastic, or bitumen based sealant to seal gaps between the pipe and the roofing material.

To install a brick or metal stove pipe on an ondulin roof, a special covering apron is sold. The joints are closed with Onduflesh self-adhesive insulating tape.
