Cleaning the ceiling from whitewashing is a long, laborious and dusty job. However, some tricks will help make the process much easier and faster. By combining several effective methods for removing the old layer, you will cope with the task quickly and efficiently. The chalky solution crumbles more, but rinses off faster and easier. Limestone is more viscous and durable. It is more difficult to remove it.

There are various ways of this process, but it should be borne in mind that it is impossible to carry out it completely without dust. Therefore, it is required to protect the floor, walls and furniture as much as possible, so that it is easier to clean up later.

To do this, we dismantle the chandeliers, take out small interior items (paintings, vases, figurines), equipment. We cover large furniture (especially soft furniture) with polyethylene. It will not be superfluous to lay the film on the floor, after removing the carpet. It is better to seal the doorway with a cloth or polyethylene so that dust does not get into the next room.

Before removing the whitewash from the ceiling, you need to protect the skin, respiratory tract and eyes from dust. To do this, we put on glasses, rubber gloves, work clothes, a respirator and a headscarf.

When removing the old whitewash with a spatula, it is better to initially moisten the surface with warm water. Dry cleaning will lead to very intense dust formation.

Decide immediately on the method of applying solutions to whitewash. Often, effective removal requires a combination of several methods and the use of different types of tools. For example, over a large area, it is easier to apply the composition with a spray bottle. Thus, the ceiling can be wetted quickly, evenly and efficiently.

Some solutions (from copper sulfate) can only be applied with a roller or brush. Also, when using a roller, it is important to use a product with soft bristles and long fibers. In this case, the layer will fit well and penetrate deeply. You will need a brush to handle joints, corners and hard-to-reach places.

It is advisable to immediately stock up on a sharp metal spatula and a soft foam sponge to remove residues. After removing the whitewash, additional sanding with fine-grained paper may be required.

The process is long and laborious, but effective and budgetary. This method is most often used to remove chalky whitewash, as it is less aggressive and moisture resistant. For work we need an ordinary soft foam sponge and table salt.

In the process, we adhere to the following instructions:

  • Dissolve 1 kg of salt in 10 liters of hot water.
  • Cool the composition to +45 degrees.
  • Apply it with a sponge to the ceiling with rotational movements.

The solution should be replaced as often as possible, washing off the layer with a sponge until the previous surface coating is visible. Then the surface should be sanded with coarse-grained paper.

To do this, you can use both industrial wallpaper glue and "home" made of flour or starch. The main advantage of this method is the relatively less dust generation.

We work in the following sequence:

  1. We bring the composition to the consistency of liquid sour cream.
  2. We moisten a soft building roller in a container with glue, slightly pressing it against the walls.
  3. Apply a thick overlap to the surface.
  4. After complete absorption, when the coating dries a little, take a pointed spatula and remove the remains.

The dust will be held together by sticky particles, and therefore will be less spread.

This method is also considered less dusty, but it will take more time. It is used primarily for cleaning from lime mortar. To implement it, you will need the same adhesive composition and old wallpaper (newspapers).

We carry out the removal of whitewash from the ceiling in the following sequence:

  • Prepare the glue solution and stir thoroughly until a homogeneous consistency.
  • Apply to the surface with a brush and roller.
  • We moisten wallpaper or newspapers with the composition, attaching them to the coating.
  • We do not glue the edges, so that they can then be conveniently and quickly removed.
  • We are waiting for the glue to set and dry a little, and remove the paper. The top finishing layer should be attached to it.

After removing wallpaper or newspaper, additional cleaning of the ceiling with a damp sponge or pointed trowel may be required.

Removing the coating that shows rusty marks is more difficult. In this case, it is necessary to effectively and completely get rid of the old whitewash and disinfect the base. For these purposes, a vitriol solution is used, which will help not only to effectively get rid of old whitewash, but also from rusty spots or smudges.

Before you wash off the whitewash from the ceiling, prepare a solution. Dissolve 130 grams of copper sulfate in 10 liters of warm water. Mix thoroughly and add 250 grams of laundry soap shavings. After complete dissolution, add 240 grams of dry glue and 2.5 kg of chalk. Add 30 grams of linseed oil to the composition and mix until a homogeneous mass is obtained.

We work in this order:

  1. We apply a thick layer of the made vitriol primer using a roller.
  2. We carefully process the joints and corners with a brush.
  3. We are waiting for the swelling of the old layer and remove the remnants with a spatula.
  4. We wash the surface with clean water and sand with fine-grained paper.

Please note that the composition cannot be heated or sprayed onto the surface. How to remove whitewash from the ceiling - watch the video:
