1. Acrylic paints

In the first place in demand are acrylic water-based paints. Their main component is acrylic resin. They are by no means cheap. Therefore, it is better to look in stores for the same paints with acrylic copolymers. In terms of quality, they are practically not inferior to the original, and at a price they are much more economical and more affordable.

If the acrylic coating contains latex, then the treated surface effectively resists moisture, and applying it in two layers can even hide small cracks.

2. Silicone paints

By the type of acrylic, they also contain silicone resin. These are the highest quality paints that can be used for all types of mineral coatings. They can paint cracks and crevices up to 2 mm wide. The paints form a vapor-permeable coating, and this allows them to be used in damp places that are prone to dampness. This is a reliable protection against the appearance of fungus, and such surfaces can be washed thoroughly and vigorously, without fear that the paint will wear off. Water-based paints of this type are expensive, but the quality absolutely justifies the price.

3. Silicate paints

It is a mixture of liquid glass and water, to which colored pigments are added. The painted surface has good vapor and air permeability and will last about 20 years. But provided that the humidity of the environment is lower than the humidity of the material itself covered with paint, it is better to use a different type of finish.

4. Mineral paints

The main component is slaked lime or cement. Most suitable for painting on bricks and concrete surfaces with increased hydraulic loads. However, due to its short service life, this type is very rarely used.

In addition to water emulsion, a primer is needed, and if we are talking about a ceiling that needs repair, then you need to purchase a putty and a solution to remove old paint.

Required tools:

  • a roller about 20 cm wide with medium pile (it is better not to use rollers with a foam or velor coating);
  • thin brush for painting edges and corners;
  • bath for painting work;
  • fine-grained sandpaper for rubbing the putty;
  • putty knife.

To make the process of painting the ceiling with your own hands more comfortable, it is advisable to purchase a telescopic handle for the roller, so you can paint the ceiling while standing on the floor without various chairs and tables.

Preparatory work:

  1. First, remove the layer of old paint using an alkaline detergent and a spatula. Then rinse with plain water and let dry.
  2. If there are defects on the ceiling, they need to be opened and puttyed. Then sand with sandpaper and remove dust with a vacuum cleaner or a damp sponge.
  3. Prime the ceiling. A deep penetrating acrylic primer works best. The dry surface is ready for painting with water-based emulsion.

Main works:

  1. Prepare the paint according to the instructions attached to it. During the first painting, as a rule, the mixture can be diluted with water up to 10% for better application to the ceiling.
  2. Painting begins with painting over the corners and edges of the ceiling 3-4 cm wide, so as not to stain the walls with a roller during work.
  3. The paint should be applied perpendicular to the rays of the sun, and move deeper into the room. In order to avoid streaking, paint should be applied with a “W” -like motion. When the paint on the roller is almost empty, repeat the process on the painted surface to remove excess paint.
  4. After complete drying, a second coat should be applied. It should be thin, you can already move parallel to the sun's rays in the direction from the window. This way you can cover all unpainted areas, and the surface of the ceiling will be smooth and beautiful.
