For the construction of the fence, you will need untreated boards with an unsawed and partially sawn edge. They are obtained by cutting off the extreme sections of the log or the areas closest to it. Often, such structures are built only for the duration of any work.

Fences made of such material can be deaf or through. They differ in the absence or presence of gaps between the elements. Billets can be nailed in various ways: vertically or horizontally, herringbone, overlap. A hedge looks beautiful with boards fixed in a checkerboard pattern. In this case, cuts of various lengths are used, which are fixed with an overlap of several centimeters. The method is quite laborious, but it looks original.

For the construction of a typical structure, you will need beams for supports and roughly processed boards 2-2.5 cm for sewing the gaps between them. In order for the fence to be operated for a long time, a foundation, a basement and support pillars are built from brick and stone. If you approach the process with imagination, you can build an attractive fence. Often, fences are built on wooden supports for decorative purposes, but this design is short-lived due to the presence of bark beetles under the bark.

Advantages and disadvantages of an unedged board fence

Rough board fences are popular with farmers, summer residents for enclosing the territory and for other purposes.

Users highlight the following positive aspects of the hedge:

  • Ease of installation … For the construction of the structure, no special knowledge and special devices are required.
  • Low billet prices … Rough lumber is cheaper than finished products. The cost of 1 rm of a fence made of an unedged board together with a foundation does not exceed $ 15.
  • Original appearance … The material looks good with any type of base: stone, wood or metal.
  • Long service life … With proper care and timely restoration of the protective coating, the service life of a wooden fence made of unedged board is not inferior to a metal one.
  • Ease of care … It is enough to periodically clean such buildings from dust and, as necessary, restore the paintwork on them.

There are few disadvantages of such structures. The main problem is the high weight, which requires the strengthening of the supporting structures.

Technology for mounting a fence from an unedged board

For the construction of a fence, you will need the simplest tools that are in any household, and knowledge of the technology of work. Below are the main stages of construction operations.

Selection of materials for the fence

For construction work, you will need the following materials:

  1. Raw board or slab … Blanks are taken of the same length with a thickness of 2-2, 5 cm. An edged board is called a board whose edges are not aligned. Bark may be present at the ends. Croaker - semicircular specimens with bark, which are considered waste. When buying a slab, the estimated amount of material must be increased by 20 percent, because there is usually a lot of substandard in the party. Less than 10 percent of unprocessed boards are defective.
  2. Fence supports … They are made of 10x10 cm timber. You can use metal pipes or metal profiles, but you will have to spend more time and effort for their installation. When purchasing pipes, choose products with a thick wall. The most reliable wooden supports are larch beams. In such wood, moisture only increases the strength of the beams. Pine and oak products do not rot for a long time. In the first case, resin is present in the composition of the logs, in the second - tannins.
  3. Horizontal lines … They are made from a 10x5 cm bar. They are used in the case of vertical fastening of workpieces. With a horizontal arrangement of the fence, they are not needed, the boards are fixed directly to the supports. If the distance between the supports is large, additional vertical struts are installed to strengthen the rigidity. When building a standard fence with a height of 1, 8 m, two horizontal lines are enough, which are attached at the top and bottom.

In addition, you will need concrete for reliable fastening of the supports in the ground, a protective coating - bituminous impregnation, antiseptic, fire retardant and other means, as well as fasteners - usually nails, screws, bolts.

When buying, pay attention to the condition of the blanks:

  • Check the absence of cracks on the boards, which may appear after a violation of the technology of drying and storage of the material. Their presence reduces the life of the fence.
  • Do not use birch specimens as they are fragile and fragile.
  • Discard boards with knots that do not tolerate mechanical stress and precipitation.
  • Examine the surface of the lumber. There should be no potholes or chips on it. Defects complicate the installation process.
  • Select blanks by looking closely at their cross-section. It should have a harmonious appearance.
  • The width of the product must be more than 20 cm. Boards of this size will not crack during construction work.
  • Buy dry samples only. Wet ones cannot be painted, and after drying, they are deformed. If, nevertheless, you purchased freshly sawn material, lay it in rows under a canopy, shifting each layer with beams. After a month, the product can be used for its intended purpose.

Installation of supports for the fence

Installing a wooden fence post

The mounting technology of the supports depends on the material from which they are made. Consider the popular options for attaching racks.

Wooden posts are installed as follows:

  1. Make holes in the ground with a depth of 0.8-1 m. The size of the hole depends on the height of the timber. The underground part should be 1/3 of the height of the support.
  2. Cover the bottom of the beams with bitumen impregnation.
  3. Install the posts in the corner pits, set them in a vertical plane and fix them with wooden wedges.
  4. Fill the hole with soil, carefully tamping each layer.

Metal supports are attached to a columnar foundation. Perform the work in the following sequence:

  • Dig a hole 1-1.4 m deep and measuring 0.3x0.3 m.
  • Create a sand and gravel cushion of rubble and sand at the bottom, 20 cm thick.
  • Prepare the concrete and pour the formwork. Construction work can be continued only after reaching 70 percent of the strength.

The most reliable support for a wooden structure is a strip foundation. They significantly extend the period of the fence.

The order of work is as follows:

  1. Dig a hole around the fence 500 mm deep and 400 mm wide.
  2. Pour a 10-15 cm thick pillow of gravel and sand on the bottom and compact everything thoroughly, periodically pouring water and adding sand. Construction waste can be used instead of gravel.
  3. Assemble the formwork in the trench, make sure that it protrudes 200 mm above the ground. The wall width should be no more than 300 mm.
  4. Prepare the concrete and pour the formwork.
  5. To prevent the concrete from drying slowly and not cracking, water it with water every three days, and then cover it with plastic.
  6. After the concrete has dried, lay out the cinder block posts. To do this, you need standard bricks made of this material with a size of 400x200x200 mm.
  7. On the foundation, lay the posts in two bricks with bandaging the seams until a height of 2 m above the foundation is obtained. The distance between them is 3 m. To obtain a given height, 9 rows of bricks are needed. On rows 2 and 8, put metal mortgages 500 mm long, to which the vertical beams will be attached. They can be welded or bolted to the mortgages. In the latter case, make through holes in the mortgages before installation.
  8. After the mortar dries, treat the wall with a primer, which will slow down its destruction, increase the adhesion when plastering.

The manufacture of supports will increase the cost of the fence, but in the future will facilitate repair work. If necessary, you can quickly replace wooden boards without touching the power elements, or instead of a wooden structure, install a section made of another material.

Fence cladding rules

Before making an unedged board fence, peel the bark off the lumber and cover with anti-rot, insect and fire protection. You can also apply other impregnations, for example, to highlight the texture of the wood. Under the influence of such means, the tree will have a noble beautiful shade. If the boards are to be painted, do not grind or sand them.

Perform the following operations:

  • Cut the samples to the desired sizes. Horizontal workpieces should be 2-3 cm less than the distance between the posts.
  • To create a vertical fence from an unedged board, prepare horizontal beams 10 cm longer than the distance between the beams.
  • Mark the posts 30 cm from the ground and 30 cm from the top edge of the beam. Install along the markings horizontally and secure with bolts or self-tapping screws. Dip the fasteners in machine oil before screwing in.
  • Nail the boards to the beams or screw them with self-tapping screws. Each element must be attached at four points, 2 for each beam. To make the fence look harmonious, choose nails that match the color of the fence. If you leave a small gap between the boards, you get a picket fence. When laying in a herringbone style, fasten the lumber with an overlap of 2-3 cm.
  • When installing a horizontal fence from an unedged board, start work from the bottom, leaving a gap of 2 cm to the ground. Nail the rest of the samples with an overlap of a couple of centimeters.
  • After sheathing, mask the metal posts with vertical planks so that they don't clash with the fence.
  • Make gates and wickets from the same material. If you have purchased ready-made gates and doors, trim them with unedged products.

After covering the openings, apply special products to the surface of the fence and fix a roof over the fence, which will protect it from the adverse effects of atmospheric precipitation. The work belongs to simple operations and does not require large financial investments.

On top of the section, it is recommended to attach a board at a slight angle to protect the lumber from precipitation. Cover the pillars with plugs that can be made from slate, roofing material.

Solutions of a different nature are often applied to products, which are selected depending on climatic conditions, the composition of the paint and varnish or other coating, the purpose of the fence. For these purposes, paint is most often used, because varnish or "artificial aging" will be very expensive. It is recommended that you choose a shade that matches the color of the roof or other part of the building. You can also make the tool yourself from the available components.

To prepare it you will need:

  • Natural drying oil - 107 ml;
  • Rye flour - 193 grams;
  • Iron vitriol (antiseptic) - 87 grams;
  • Red iron (dye) - 87 grams;
  • Salt - 87 grams;
  • Water - 1.5 liters.

To prepare the solution, follow these steps:

  1. Pour the flour in 1 liter of water and prepare the paste. To prevent lumps from forming, mix the components with a mixer.
  2. Add ferrous sulfate, salt and mix everything thoroughly.
  3. When the ingredients are completely dissolved, add red iron.
  4. Linseed oil and 0.5 liters of water are poured into the mixture last. Mix all components thoroughly, and add water until the required consistency is obtained. So that the paint does not wash off for a long time, simmer the composition over low heat for 2-3 hours.

The result will be 2 liters of a substance that can be used to treat 7 m2 fence.

The prepared oil paint does not close the pores and allows the wood to "breathe", unlike synthetic products. In addition, such a solution has fire-fighting and antibacterial properties, which increases the life of the fence. After application, natural patterns appear on the boards, emphasizing the beauty of the material.

Apply the mortar while still warm to reduce the consumption. Note that on smooth surfaces and where the bark has recently been removed, the paint will appear lighter.

The coating dries up after 2-3 hours. All this time, sunlight should not fall on it, so carry out the operation in the evening.

The cover renewal is carried out after peeling is detected. Usually several years pass when the original layer no longer copes with its task and requires restoration.
