Rose hydrolate was used by women for the purpose of skin rejuvenation many, many years ago, and now this product, which is discussed in this article, is equally popular. For some women, the word "hydrolat" remains a mysterious chemical name, but this concept can be simplified by explaining it as floral, aromatic water. True, not all hydrolates smell good and not all of them are made from flowers. As for rose hydrolat, this rose water, as it is also called, cannot but attract attention due to its special aroma and properties.

History of rose water use

Rose water is noted for the presence of a characteristic rose aroma. Usually, to obtain hydrolat, the method of water distillation of different varieties of roses, which contain more essential oils, is used. This method is the result of rose oil extraction technology.

Rose, regardless of its variety, has always been considered a symbol of beauty, moreover, even in ancient times it was called the queen of all flowers, and having learned about the healing properties of the plant, Hippocrates and Avicenna took up the description of this miracle.

Rose hydrolat was a popular product for refreshing the skin among the ancient Romans and Persians, but already in the Middle Ages in Europe, this water was used to reduce depression. Water has found its use in the countries of the East and Asia in the field of cooking.

Let us, since we have already looked into history, let's take up the mention of the beauty of Nefertiti and Cleopatra, namely, the condition of their skin. Their face always looked healthy and fresh. Of course, genetics plays an important role, but proper care is not lagging behind it, in which famous personalities included rose hydrolate.

Referring to written records of the tenth century from an Arab philosopher named Ibn Khaldun, we can learn that at that time rose water was a valuable commodity in many places, from China to Byzantium.

A large role was given to the rose by the poets of ancient Persia, who inspired the queen of flowers in "hundreds of volumes." From there came the name "Gulistan", which means "Rose Valley". According to one of the Muslim legends, one day all the plants asked Allah to appoint them another ruler, instead of the lotus, Allah listened to the requests and created a rose, after which we can say that the rose is a gift from the Almighty.

How to get rose hydrolat

If you think that to obtain rose water, it is enough to simply soak the collected rose flowers in water for a while, you are wrong. The process of creating a hydrolat is relatively laborious, but this does not mean that it cannot be done at home.

For the manufacture of hydrolat, flowers of different varieties of roses can be used, the most famous are the Bulgarian rose and Damascus.

Industrial rose water

To obtain rose water, in the morning, flowers of essential oil roses are manually collected in the phase of their flowering, then the harvested "crop" is transported to the plant for storage in special containers with stirrers. While stirring, the flowers are poured with cold water in a ratio of 1: 2, 5. With the help of pumps, the contents of the containers are converted into a homogeneous mixture, which subsequently goes into distillation apparatus with a heating jacket, a bubbler and a stirrer. After heating to the boiling state of the flowers with deaf steam and the supply of live steam, steam distillation takes place. As a result of this technological process, the steam is saturated with rose oil, transported to the heat exchanger-condenser and lowers its temperature, flowing into the decanter, where it is separated into rose oil and distillate. The oil, in turn, has a strong rose scent. This product, which is a waxy mixture, is not cheap but has unique skin rejuvenation properties. As for the secondary distillate, it is just a rose hydrolate, to which a small amount of rose oil is added, as well as ethyl alcohol (up to 5%) to stabilize the product. Rose water is often stirred and matured within 15 days.

Hydrolat at home

If garden roses grow in your country house, this is great, because flower water, prepared with the participation of roses, will help to provide the skin with youth, elasticity, freshness, firmness and eliminate some skin defects. To prepare rose water:

  1. Pour some cold water into a large saucepan and add rose petals. The less water you pour, the more saturated the hydrolat will be.
  2. Place a bowl in the middle, where the evaporation will drain.
  3. Cover the pot with an inverted lid and wrap the edges with foil for a better seal so that the water flows into the bowl and not the pot.
  4. You can put ice on the lid to speed up the formation of condensation.
  5. Turn the stove on to a minimum.
  6. After 2 hours, reduce heat and remove the lid.

Despite the fact that a hydrolat, be it roses, chamomile or any other plant, can be made at home, the product made will differ from the industrial version. The fact is that when creating flower water, the smell can spread throughout the room, and this indicates the loss of a certain amount of essential oils. Also, home-made hydrolates without preservatives can be stored for no more than a week.
