Stuffed tomatoes are a huge field for culinary experiments. After all, these juicy and dense cups can be filled with absolutely all fillings. For example, different combinations of vegetables, chicken, mushrooms, meat, cheese, herbs. All of these products go great with tomatoes. Plus, stuffed tomatoes are versatile. They can be served both raw and baked in the oven, of course, if the filling allows. They can also be used as a cold and hot appetizer or served as a main course.

Some tips for preparing this dish

Preparing this appetizer is not at all difficult. However, in order for the dish to look decent and have a delicious taste, you need to know certain cooking rules.

  • For stuffing, ripe tomatoes of medium size, with a fairly dense pulp, are suitable.
  • It is very important that the tomatoes are approximately the same size and that there is no damage to the skin.
  • Be sure to check tomatoes for "stability". Since an uneven tomato will seem crooked, unappetizing and awkward.
  • Remove the middle from the tomatoes with a tea (coffee) spoon or knife, very carefully so as not to damage the walls of the fruit.
  • Cutting the top off the tomato and removing the pulp, the tomatoes are turned over with the cut down for a couple of minutes to drain the excess liquid.
  • To prevent the tomatoes from losing their shape when baked in the oven, pierce them in several places with a toothpick.

Types of fillings for stuffed tomatoes

Fillings can be very diverse, but still the products should be combined with tomatoes. Naturally, you cannot put chocolate in them, no one will like this combination. However, tomatoes are "friendly" with a huge amount of products. The second factor in the choice of filling is whether the stuffed tomatoes are heat treated. Since not every filling is designed for this.

1. Wash the tomatoes, wipe them dry and cut off the top so that you have access to the pulp, instead of which you will put the filling. Try to make the cut even and neat. After, carefully remove all the pulp from each tomato and turn it over for 1-2 minutes to drain the remaining liquid. By the way, the pulp of tomatoes in this recipe is not useful to us, so you can use it to cook borscht, stew or other dish.

2. Wash the meat, dry it, remove the film, veins and twist it in a meat grinder. Peel the onions, wash them under running water and also pass them through a meat grinder. Peel and squeeze the garlic using a press. Season the filling with salt and black pepper and mix well.

3. After the excess liquid drains from the tomatoes, fill them tightly with the meat filling so that it cannot settle. Place the tomatoes in a baking dish, which is best filled with tomatoes completely and tightly. This will prevent the tomatoes from wobbling and falling off during cooking.

4. Grate the cheese on a coarse grater and grind the tomatoes liberally. Send tomatoes with filling to bake in the oven preheated to 180-200 degrees for 15-20 minutes. This time is quite enough for the tomatoes to cook, and the meat is not raw. Garnish with herbs when serving tomatoes. By the way, you can use them as a cold and hot snack at the same time.
